knows Eve Room the sensor that measures indoor temperature, humidity and air quality

Home automation has long been going beyond simple lights or plugs connected to the grid. The Eve Company is one of the most being done to take HomeKit accessories to a new level of intelligence. An intention that is embodied in a product such as the Eve Room, a temperature, humidity and air quality sensor designed for indoors.

We have been testing this accessory in recent weeks and we can say that it is very interesting, especially thanks to the automation possibilities that it allows.

Eve Room, technical specifications:

  • Product Type: Sensor integrated with HomeKit.
Variables measured: temperature, humidity and air quality.
  • Temperature range: 0 and 50 degrees Celsius.
    Humidity range: 5-95%.
  • Outdoor use: no, only interiors.
  • Electronic ink display, 200 x 200 pixels.
  • Battery: rechargeable via micro-USB, 6 weeks of battery life.
  • Dimensions: 54 x 54 x 15mm.

The reissue of an old acquaintance

It’s quite possible that the Eve Room will ever make you look good. And in fact, it’s a reissue of The Eve Degree, a temperature and humidity sensor that we analyzed last year in wipelocker. The Room is almost the same in appearance to the Degree, with the same dimensions but slightly thicker, electronic ink display and integrated into HomeKit. The fundamental differences with the previous model are three:

  • Indoors only.
  • Rechargeable battery instead of button battery.
  • Adds air quality sensor.

On the first point, we must take into account that if our intention is to use it with HomeKit it is very likely that we want to have it in some room inside the house. Switching to a rechargeable battery via micro-USB cable is a convenience advance, although it requires a charge approximately every six weeks (the button battery lasted a year).

What really sets the Room apart is the new air quality sensor. This sensor measures VOC or volatile organic compounds. These are the chemicals found almost everywhere. If concentrated at high levels, they can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and nose, as well as other stronger symptoms. The fastest solution is to open a window to ventilate the room.

Automation with other Eve HomeKit and app accessories

The Eve Room can be used directly with the Apple-created Home app for its home automation accessories on iOS. This will allow us to incorporate the accessory into your corresponding room, as well as check the status of the sensors and give the relevant orders to Siri.

However, in automation in the Home app, the Eve Room does not appear as an available sensor. In theory one should be able to use the three sensors of this device to trigger certain actions in other home automation accessories. A very useful example may be lighting a humidifier, turning up the heating or opening a window to ventilate.

Fortunately, the Eve app does allow automation with other accessories (although we haven’t been able to test it because it lacks the right ones). The app does provide other things that aren’t possible in Apple’s. In addition to automation, with the Eve Room you can have very precise graphs with the variation of each sensor.

-The Eve Room can give you access to very useful information when put in context, as well as open your home to more advanced automation-

With daily, weekly, monthly and even annual views, we will be able to see the evolution of the temperature, humidity and air quality of the room in which the device is located. You want to know if it’s too cold at night in the children’s room? Does my eye irritation match the air quality of the living room? How does it affect the humidity in my room when sleeping in summer? Leave it there for a week to know for sure what modifications affect these and other situations.

This type of information and the value we draw from the automation possibilities will depend on whether we are willing to pay the almost 100 euros that the Eve Room costs. It’s a high price, but for which in return you will receive a solid product, good design, reduced size and functionalities that fulfill what they promise.
