In early May, the urban Armor Gear accessories manufacturer, better known as UAG, put its new straps for the Apple Watch on sale. Like all the products that characterize the brand, these new straps presumed strength. I was struck by another detail of them: they looked amazing next to the Apple Watch.

In recent weeks I have been testing the new UAG straps for the Apple Watch, specifically the brown leather strap. A product tremendously careful in its construction with materials that in addition to resisting what comes before them, they also bring their own style to the Apple watch that we do not see in any of the official of the Cupertino brand.

What characterizes the UAG leather strap for Apple Watch

The first thing I would like to start with when describing this strap are its materials. UAG has used an Italian leather, they say, 100% natural. The leather is treated to better resist and acquire a characteristic brown color. Next to the leather we also see the use of stainless steel for the buckle and hooks to the Apple Watch case. A stainless steel tinted in matt black. Otherwise in sight for the user we see the seams of the strap and the logo of the brand, although it is hardly noticeable since it is a slit and not a color print or other treatment on the leather.

But there is one aspect that has drawn even more attention to me than the materials themselves, it is the extra loop that comes with it. The strap clip is that kind of «hoop» that serves to pick up the excess part of the strap once tied to the hand. In the case of UAG what they have done is add a button so that the loop is always attached to the end of the strap. I don’t know if other straps on traditional watches do it too, for me it’s the first time I’ve seen it and I love it. It’s tremendously useful so you don’t have to be moving the loop all the time if you’re a maniac like me and you want it to fit the strap as much as possible.

Steel is very discreet, being tinted in matt black. With hardly any extra weight for the strap and without being too big or wide, it is perfect as a secondary belt material. If you have to put a catch on it is that the fit with the apple watch case is not 100% perfect. Actually I think no third-party strap has gotten a fit as perfect as Apple’s official, I think something Apple does so that only theirs do it, I haven’t tried any that does it quite right yet. In any case, it is not a real problem in everyday life and does not leave a «hollow» as exaggerated as it does happen with some of the other manufacturers.

Over time the leather is getting old, I’ve only used it for a few weeks and not every day, but I already see traces of that aging. The strap is looking different, it is clarified in some parts where there is more friction and you have marks of use. It is the disadvantage and at the same time the beauty of natural leather.

Is UAG Leather Strap for Apple Worth it?

Yes. It’s all right. For just over 60 euros it is difficult to buy a leather strap with better materials and final appearance, it is practically unrivalled. Even Apple’s leather sat in the dark are not comparable, besides having different prices, they don’t have such a «classic» look of watch strap, but focus more on the design. The closest thing we have in the Apple Store is the Herms Simple Tour strap, but it’s still different.
